The day before the famous Five Boro Bike Tour, a very special event takes place in New York: the Blessing of the Bicycles at the impressive Cathedral of St. John the Divine.
What to expect
Cyclists are not the only ones welcome here. Skaters, scooter riders, and anyone who moves through the city on two wheels or other self-powered vehicles can take part. In short: everyone who shares the streets.
Participants arrive in their usual cycling clothes and bring their bikes into the imposing cathedral. After a few introductory words from the reverend, the bicycles are sprinkled with holy water as a symbol of safety, health, and well-being for the coming season.
One especially moving moment is the minute of silence for cyclists who died in traffic during the previous year. A riderless bicycle is carried through the congregation. Afterward, everyone rings their bike bells together, a loud and joyful sign of the love of cycling.
Good to know
- Important: The ceremony is wonderful, but very short. If you arrive late, you may miss it.
- Doors open at 8:30 AM. Admission is free, but donations are welcome. The event is also livestreamed.
