The observation deck at the Empire State Building is one of the most famous in New York and a true classic. From here, you get an open panoramic view over Manhattan and, on a clear day, far beyond the city.

What makes it special

The Empire State Building offers more than just a view. On your way up, you will see the control panel for the building’s special light displays and a model of the Empire State Building that makes a fun photo stop.

Exhibits on the 2nd and 80th Floors

Your visit starts with several exhibits where you can learn more about one of the world’s most famous buildings. The displays cover the historic construction, opening, and role of the Empire State Building in pop culture. There are also great photo spots, including the interactive King Kong exhibit.

Another highlight is Stephen Wiltshire’s drawing. In 2017, the British artist flew over New York by helicopter for 45 minutes and then drew a detailed cityscape completely from memory. You can see that drawing here today.

Observation Deck on the 86th Floor

Once you reach the 86th floor, you can enjoy the panoramic view over New York. The outdoor platform is surrounded by a metal fence, which means you can take photos without window reflections.

The observation deck is basically circular, so you can walk around freely and take in the city from every side. In the northeast corner, there is a nice photo spot, and sometimes there are special pop-ups inside.

By the way, in winter, outdoor heaters help a little while you are outside.

Top Deck on the 102nd Floor

If you want to go even higher, you can visit the small panoramic observation deck near the top of the Empire State Building. From here, you see the city from more of a bird’s-eye perspective. The 102nd floor is enclosed in glass.

Tip: The entrance to the observation deck is on 34th Street. You can also take a quick look inside the beautiful Art Deco lobby on the 5th Avenue side.

Pricing & Tickets

Tickets must be booked in advance and are tied to a specific date and time slot.

All tickets include the exhibits on the 2nd and 80th floors.

Good to Know

Before your visit, you have to go through a security check with a metal detector. Bags are checked there as well.

Suitcases or large bags, tripods, and glass bottles are not allowed inside the Empire State Building. There are no lockers on site.

Strollers are allowed but must be folded. You also have the option to buy Flex or Express tickets or book a guided tour.

  • Best for first-time visitors, skyline views, and classic New York photos.
  • Plan around 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on crowds and ticket type.
  • Book ahead if you want a specific time slot, sunset visit, or less waiting.
