From a free ferry ride to an island visit or helicopter tour, there are several ways to see the Statue of Liberty. Here’s how they compare and which might suit your schedule and budget.

Statue of Liberty

The Statue of Liberty is one of the world’s most famous landmarks. What many people don’t realize is how many different ways there are to see it, from completely free options to exclusive experiences. The best choice depends on how close you want to get and how much time you have.

1. Staten Island Ferry (free)

The Staten Island Ferry is the simplest and cheapest way to see the Statue of Liberty, with no ticket needed.

The ferry runs around the clock and is completely free. You get a good view of the Statue of Liberty along the way, but it doesn’t stop there. You’ll see the statue from the water without setting foot on the island.

Ideal if you’re short on time, don’t want to spend money, or simply want to see the statue.

2. Statue Cruises: island, pedestal, and crown access

If you want to visit the Statue of Liberty itself, you need tickets from Statue Cruises, the only official provider offering access to Liberty Island.

There are several ticket options:

  • Island access: walk around the statue.
  • Pedestal access: climb up for an additional viewpoint.
  • Crown access: limited entry via a narrow staircase. Book well in advance.

This option is especially worthwhile if you’re interested in history and details, have half a day to spare, or specifically want to visit the Statue of Liberty.

3. Boat trips and sightseeing cruises

Many operators offer boat trips that pass the Statue of Liberty or pause nearby. These aren’t free, but they’re often a more relaxed option than visiting the island.

You get closer than you would on the Staten Island Ferry, but you don’t get off the boat. These trips usually also include:

  • Skyline views
  • Live commentary or audio guides

A good option if you want to combine several sights in one trip.

4. Helicopter tour

The most spectacular and most expensive option is a helicopter tour over New York. You’ll see the Statue of Liberty from above, along with Manhattan, the Hudson River, and often the Brooklyn Bridge.

A helicopter tour may suit you if you want to see New York from the air and are willing to spend more on the experience.

5. Views from Governors Island

Governors Island also offers a lovely view of the Statue of Liberty in a quieter, more relaxed setting than Manhattan.

The island is especially popular in spring and summer, with plenty of space, green areas, and a very different atmosphere. The statue is farther away than it would be on a boat trip, but you can still see it clearly.

My personal tip

If you simply want to see the Statue of Liberty, the Staten Island Ferry is all you need. If you want to explore it, plan a visit with Statue Cruises.

The other options, from sightseeing cruises and island views to helicopter tours, come down to your budget, time, and interests. There are plenty of good ways to experience it.
