Bryant Park’s Picnic Performances are one of the best free summer events in New York. You can enjoy high-quality performances in a beautiful outdoor setting, completely free.

What to expect

In the summer months, Bryant Park hosts its Picnic Performances series: free live performances right in the park. And these are not just any performances. The lineup includes artists from Carnegie Hall, New York City Opera, the American Symphony Orchestra, and other established cultural institutions.

The open-air events in Bryant Park are very popular with New Yorkers and visitors alike. It is a wonderful way to experience art and culture in New York, with a beautiful backdrop and no ticket price.

Picnic Performances take place several times a week, with nearly 25 performances in total. Most begin at 7:00 PM, with two exceptions noted below.

Good to know

  • You do not need tickets or registration to watch the performances.
  • Arrive early: The lawn opens at 5:00 PM, and the front spots fill up within minutes. If you want a good seat, try to arrive before 5:00 PM. If you are fine sitting farther back or off to the side, you can stop by later.
  • Enjoy the Empire State Building view at the same time: If you sit toward the front right, you can also see the Empire State Building.
  • Bring a blanket or towel to sit on: The front area is reserved for picnics. Otherwise, you can use the park’s bistro chairs. Plastic blankets are not allowed.
  • Bring food and drinks: You are allowed to bring your own food and drinks. If you do not have anything with you, you can also buy snacks on-site from the vendors. Alcohol, smoking, and vaping are not allowed.
  • Use the restroom beforehand: Try to go before the performance starts so you do not miss the best moments. Bryant Park has some of the nicest public restrooms in New York, but with this many visitors, the line can get very long.
  • Keep an eye on the weather: Bryant Park’s open-air events are weather-dependent. For updates, check Bryant Park’s Instagram Stories at @bryantparknyc. If the start time changes or the event is canceled, you will usually hear it there first.
