Spending Christmas Eve in New York and feel like singing a few carols? Neighbors and visitors gather by the Christmas tree beneath the Washington Square Arch to sing together.
What to expect
The Washington Square Association holds this community sing-along every Christmas Eve, with a brass band and a professional singer leading the music. You’re not just watching a performance. You can join in yourself.
Don’t know all the words? Songbooks are handed out at the event. You can also download a free copy from the organizer’s website beforehand and bring it on your phone.
The gathering takes place at the Washington Square Arch on the north side of the park. The Christmas tree is already lit by then: Christmas Eve caroling is a separate event from the tree-lighting ceremony held earlier in December.
Good to know
- Taking part is free. Donations are welcome but not required.
- The sing-along is suitable for families.
- Dress warmly, as you’ll be standing outdoors. Gloves are useful when you’re holding a songbook or your phone.
