Is there something you don’t want to take into the new year? A bad habit, stress or a memory you’d rather leave behind? That’s the idea behind Good Riddance Day in Times Square.
What to expect
A few days before New Year’s Eve, you can write down what you’re ready to say goodbye to and symbolically get rid of it. So this isn’t about making wishes for the coming year. It’s about deciding what you’d like to leave in the old one.
The activity can change from year to year. In the past, participants wrote their memories on oversized tickets, then tore them like theater tickets.
Jonathan Bennett, known for “Mean Girls,” hosted the activity on a stage.
The inspiration comes from a Latin American New Year’s tradition in which figures are filled with objects representing bad memories and then burned. Times Square puts its own spin on the idea of saying goodbye. That doesn’t mean there will be a fire at the event.
Good to know
- Taking part is free.
- Don’t bring confidential documents or items to dispose of. This is a symbolic activity, not a secure shredding or burning service.
- The event is outdoors. Dress warmly if you plan to watch for a while or wait to take part.
