The Mermaid Parade in Coney Island is one of the most fun and colorful events in New York.
What to expect
Every June, thousands of participants make their way along the famous boardwalk in imaginative costumes. Many dress as mermaids, sea kings, sea monsters, or other wonderfully creative characters.
The parade was founded in 1983 by the arts organization Coney Island USA and is now the largest art parade in the United States. It celebrates Coney Island’s history as a place for entertainment, creativity, and a little bit of wonderfully odd carnival culture.
During the parade, elaborately decorated floats move through the streets, accompanied by music, dance groups, and incredibly creative costumes. Many participants spend months making their outfits and props by hand.
The parade ends with a symbolic dip in the Atlantic.
