Beer steins, pretzels, and Oktoberfest in Lower Manhattan: on Stone Street, the neighborhood’s bars and restaurants take the celebrations outside for a series of Saturdays.
What to expect
The little historic street gets dressed up for the occasion. Restaurants and bars set up outside, pouring German beer into traditional steins and serving pretzels and sausages. You don’t have to stick to German food, though: there are international dishes too.
The program also includes stein-holding contests, live music or DJs, and games. Steinholding is exactly what it sounds like: keeping a filled beer stein at arm’s length for as long as you can. The music and other activities can vary from one Saturday to the next.
The festival takes place on the pedestrian section of Stone Street between Broad Street and Hanover Square, in the Financial District, a few blocks from Wall Street.
Good to know
- Entry is free. Food and drinks cost extra.
- Children are welcome. You must be 21 or older to buy alcohol.
- Dogs are welcome on a leash.
- The street festival goes ahead in the rain. Tents provide cover, but an umbrella can still come in handy.
