What to expect
The Washington Square Park tree lighting is a lovely way to enjoy the holiday atmosphere in Greenwich Village. The park’s arch forms the backdrop as the lights on the tree come on.
There’s singing, too. Brass musicians and a vocalist accompany the carols, and you’re welcome to join in. The Washington Square Association even provides a downloadable songbook, so you don’t need to know all the words.
The ceremony usually takes place in the first or second week of December. Christmas Eve caroling is a separate event.
Good to know
I’d arrive a little early to find a spot with a view of the tree.
Dress warmly. You may spend longer standing outdoors than you expect.
